When rivers go bad

On September 6th, the innocuousĀ seeming Henmore brook, which runs past the end of my folks garden, rose by more than 10 foot and burst the river-defence boundary wall, flooding their bungalow very suddenly, at 3am šŸ˜¦

The whole thing, the event itself and especially the aftermath,Ā has been a bit surreal. When people ask how things are going,Ā I do find myself sometimesĀ actually telling them, and this means launching into rather a list – very sorry about that!

Well, the list is too long really to go into, the important thing is, things now, this beginning of December,Ā truly seems to be a turning point, with things looking better each day, rather than worse:

After some heavy-duty fans and industrial dehumidifiers working for a couple of months, the house was declared “dried out” in the first week of December, and the joists and floorboards are being replaced this week. Mum and Dad are managing remarkably well, despite everything, and are in a small but cosy rentalĀ home on the edge of town. They should be able to move back into their house in April.

We’ve been so lucky to have theĀ help of a lot of brilliant friends and family – helping with the clear-up, providing cooked meals for the team in the first week, or just listening to how things are, sending kind messages, and being a shoulder. Can’t help but feel rather unlucky in terms of what happened. ButĀ amazingly fortunate in the brillaintĀ friends we have.

Looking forward to Christmas, which we’re going to spend in a very nice village pub.

This picture, from a couple of months ago, is especially for SiĀ Ā (check the view from the window)Ā , who will know exactly what it is. šŸ™‚

Winter walk

Ā

We went a very pretty walk, to Llyn Crafnant and Llyn Geirionydd reservoirs, more pics here.

Mist in the valleys, and bright sunshine on the tops lovely. Chris and I tested the emergency shelter, and discovered that it creates emergencies just fine – happy birthday Chris, here’s a cracked skull just for you (sorry!) Other activities of the weekend included scrambling, shopping, curry, and testing the response time of the local fire brigade (1 hr 5 mins) using a complicated system of toasters, connected in both series and parallel.

Lovely weekend, Happy Birthday Chris xxxxx

And on Guitar…

Video, enjoy.

Last year's event

This year, the students will have a UniĀ Polo tournament on the 7th, so suggested plan would be, run the Santa dash, and then head down to the docks to cheer on theĀ polo teamsĀ (in costume), and then head to a suitable greasy spoon for all day breakfasts.

Who is signed up already?

Hell Runner

Where is the best place to be on a rainy November weekend.

If your answer was running through a Muddy forest encountering “the bogs of Doom” and following paths that seemed to pick the steepest hills possible. Then Delerware (sp) forest & Hellrunner are for you.

Will said “Hellrunner?”, 9 of lucky’s finest said “Hell yeah!”. So with that spirit, Myself, Ade, Mike, Will, Cath, Alison, Kev, Claire and Penny lined up at the start line, for a race no one knew the length of, or the terrain.

It turns out it was about 10-12 miles of primarily steep muddy paths. The surprise result being Mike narrowly beating Ade. And Alison only a few minutes behind Claire.

Today’s reviews..

Ade
Well done to everyone (esp Mike – fine performance!)

My legs can tell they’ve been out.

Alison
Well I can hardly walk and stairs are completely impossible!
Am taking up running for my new hobby though.

Penny (who crossed the line without being noticed)
Ah – all part of my MI6 untrackableness! Today i have decided that lifts (usually looked on with distain) are a good invention after all.

Will
After feeling like i had been hit by a bus last night, this morning i feel ok apart fom the intensely uncomfortable ring of fire of nappy rash i have between my buttocks!! I have spent the day walking like john wayne.
